Not Your Average Bonbons

Local chocolatier and founder of Hamtramck's Bon Bon Bon details her shop, how it came to be and the variety of bonbons sold there.

Alexandra Clark, founder of Bon Bon Bon in Hamtrack, is a Forbes 30 under 30 chocolatier. But this modern Willy Wonka knows some even younger experts.

“Kids are really good at inventing bon flavors,” she says – like her Coffee & Donuts and Birthday Cake bonbons. “They have really good ideas. They don’t have limits, which I think is amazing.”

Clark’s big new 6,000-square-foot chocolate factory, which sells 57 tantalizing flavors, recently opened shop. Clark, 29, has been in business since 2014 and says she was first inspired while traveling and short on funds.

“Chocolate is kind of one of the coolest things you could possibly buy when you are traveling because you can buy the best piece of chocolate in any city and anywhere all over the world for less than $5,” she says.

She moved every six months for eight years, from New Zealand and Norway to Colorado and Illinois. But she settled close to home in southeast Michigan.

“Having that community and that commitment to what we were doing was really important.”

Bon fanatics keep coming back for the Better Butter Crunch and the Strawberry Balsamic-flavored bons. The new digs also host twice-monthly public classes for all ages that are $65; watch for occasional kids classes too.

“When it comes to chocolate, at the end of the day, it’s supposed to be fun,” she says.
