Winter is here — so it’s time to bundle up and head outdoors for some snow-covered adventures. And there’s plenty of Macomb County winter fun to be had for families in southeast Michigan.
Don’t miss out on the many chances to take advantage of the snow and chilly weather and try a few wintry activities — including ice fishing, skiing and sledding.
Or, if you prefer to stay indoors this winter, there are plenty of Macomb County spots for kids to get the wiggles out (and avoid that cabin fever) — or for your family to explore.
Here’s a sampling of outdoor and indoor fun, plus a few Macomb County winter events that are still on in 2021.
Outdoor activities
With its GIS map of winter activities, Macomb County makes it easy to find all the outdoor winter activities in its 27 communities.
All you have to do is click on a specific activity to see a list of where you can experience that activity. The Macomb County winter fun includes:
- Cross-county skiing
- Ice hockey
- Ice fishing
- Ice skating
- Sledding
- Snowboarding
You can also search for a specific location using the map, too.
Family fun
Not a fan of the cold weather? There’s plenty to do and explore in Macomb County. Under the current COVID-19 restrictions, bowling alleys, roller rinks, movie theaters and museums are all open with proper safety protocols.
In addition, some indoor play spots like Detroit Kid City in Clinton Township are open by appointment and with face masks and social distancing.
You can find location details and additional information on what’s open and how to stay safe during COVID-19 on the Make Macomb Your Home website.
Missing a business that can’t be open right now? Many spots that are not currently open because of the pandemic are offering fun takeaway kits for kids via curbside pickup. You can check with your favorite local shop to see if they’re offering such options.
For those who aren’t afraid to brave the cold, Macomb County’s Metroparks are also open and are offering some outdoor workshops and events like the Full Moon Hike at Lake St. Clair Metropark (Feb. 27) and Maple Sugaring for Kids at Stony Creek Metropark (March 24).
