Top Baby's Room Trends

From bold accent walls to mid-century modern furniture, nurseries have come a long way from pale pink and baby blue.

And while it's still easy to step inside a big box retailer to pick from items that have been selected for you, many moms-to-be are stepping out of the box and adding their own stylish spin to their baby's nursery.

"People aren't doing crib sets as often anymore," says Elizabeth Ernst, the store manager of Elephant Ears in Ann Arbor.

Instead, they are mixing patterns, adding punches of color and selecting pieces that last longer than infancy.

Ernst, along with Mary Antenucci of Mary Antenucci Interiors, LLC, based in Rochester, break down all the latest trends for your baby's room.

Furniture

A trend of the '50s and '60s has reemerged thanks to the popularity of the AMC TV series Mad Men. Now, mid-century modern furniture has made its way to the nursery.

Its clean lines are oh-so-hot for every room of the house, and since Antenucci says many parents opt to continue the architectural flow from one room to the next, this could explain the trend.

And while furniture is pricey, many parents-to-be are purchasing multi-use items, like changing tables that can become desks as kids grow up, adding to the longevity of the item.

Accents

Complement these great pieces of furniture with some killer accents.

"People are really looking for those unique pieces of artwork like lamps and canvas that can really stand out in the nursery," Ernst says. This includes clocks and mirrors, too.

When it comes to art, Antenucci suggests selecting multiple pieces.

"When you're displaying artwork, I think it needs to be in a group," she says.

Moving from the walls to the floor: Rugs are another accent that's great for every nursery. Ernst says Elephant Ears sells quite a few wool rugs because they are durable and easy to clean.

Polka dots, stripes and solids are some of the options, but "Chevron has been a huge trend over the past few months," Ernst says.

Themes and colors

Ditch the black and white for baby's room. Instead, pair white with a sweep of color, like melon.

"As far as patterns go, we're moving into more foxes and elephants," Ernst says. Animal, forest and woodland themes are trending – and work for boys or girls.

Hues of pink and blue have been replaced by shades of gray.

"I think the grays are a beautiful neutral," Antenucci says. But you have to punch it up with an accent wall – in yellow or fuchsia, for example.

And if you're waiting till your baby's arrival to find out the gender but still want to complete the nursery, aqua is another go-to color that's gender neutral.

Crib to college

"The trend more now than ever is sort of building your baby's room into a toddler's room," Antenucci says.

In fact, some parents are opting to take that idea a bit further by purchasing pieces that will last until their teens or 20s.

Ernst suggests investing in pieces that convert from an infant's crib to a full-size bed – just like a crib from the AP Industries company.

While this is initially a big expense, "You really get your money's worth," she says.
