Brittany and Scott Harvey live an hour from the hospital where they planned to deliver their second son. By the time they arrived at Beaumont – Royal Oak, Brittany was dilated 7 centimeters. Labor was moving fast, and 3-year-old Emery watched as his mom quickly moved from triage to the birthing tub to the bed. Grandma then arrived to take Emery to the waiting room. Five minutes and two pushes later, little brother Weston arrived.
Baby name background: My husband and I had multiple miscarriages. The first time we ever got pregnant was in a Westin hotel in Annapolis, Maryland, when I was there working. We thought if it was a boy, we would name him “Westin.” Well, unfortunately, we lost that baby at 12 weeks, and the name never came up again – until we couldn’t name this little man. We actually took him home as “Baby Boy A” and didn’t name him for five days.
Favorite maternity clothes stores: I bought almost everything off of swap sites! I love A Pea in the Pod because they carry the best jeans. I wore a lot of non-maternity things in bigger sizes. I love Lululemon: I bought a size up and wore it when I was pregnant and after. The high-wasted leggings are the best, because they hold in the wobbly stomach.
Favorite stores for baby stuff: Buy Buy Baby for a lot of stuff, but Old Navy has the cutest “baby boy” section right now.
Best advice you’ve received: “You will have the baby you are meant to have.” After three miscarriages, one of my clients told me that. It was the only thing that got me through.
Favorite baby gift: The silky soft swaddle blankets.
Favorite mom gift: My Canon 5D Mark III camera.
Best parts about your birthing center: The tub! And essential oils.
Hospital bag tips: I wish I would have bought and brought more nursing tanks and bras.
Special perspective: You can give birth any way you want. You are your own advocate.
