Free-Range Parenting, Michael Symon Burger, Fireworks in Michigan and More

At last: Summer is in our sights! Southeast Michigan events are heating up – including loads of fireworks in Michigan – dad’s big day is coming and Ronald McDonald House Detroit has a new home. Find out what’s waiting in the June 2015 issue of Metro Parent.

All-about-kids crafts, activities and more

Our cover story this month is about kids bedroom decorating ideas. Whether it’s kids bedroom furniture or paint colors for bedrooms, giving kids some creative license can be an awesome chance for them to explore their interests. Speaking of the cover, see the little guy on it? That’s Carter – he won our CoverKids contest for 2015! Find out what other kids won too (this is one of our most popular annual Metro Parent events).

Warm weather is here, and that means kids are heading outside. Remember staying outside “until the lights came on” as a kid? Do you let your kid do the same? Find out about the free-range parenting movement – and why it’s grabbing headlines.

We’ve also got a great vacation craft: piggy banks for kids! Make one out of an upcycled small milk jug. And if your tween or teen suffers from zits in the summer, find out about types of acne, how to get rid of acne, the best face wash for acne and more. If you’re asking “Where are dermatologists near me?” our article has two great local sources, including one in Rochester Hills and Georgetown Dermatology Michigan in Sterling Heights.

Dad-approved food, events and trips

Father’s Day arrives June 21 – the same day as summer. To celebrate both, we chatted up South Lyon dad Michael Chou, who invented the Midnight Scoop, a cool new ice cream scoop. Pair that with three great Father’s Day southeast Michigan events – then find loads more ways to keep him (and the kids) busy in our June calendar of metro Detroit events, such as carnivals in Michigan, fireworks in Michigan (including Mount Clemens fireworks at a fresh festival), the new Roadside America exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie at City Theatre Detroit and Ann Arbor events like a cool Japan-themed week. Want more? Check out our roundup of 10 fun things to do in Michigan in the summer (then download our 100 Days of Summer Family Activities and Attractions in Michigan freebie for more).

Fire up the grill, too: We scored a Michael Symon Burger recipe! The Fat Doug Burger is a yummy menu option at B Spot Rochester Hills and Royal Oak.

Or take a hike, literally, with a trek to Zion National Park. One of great Utah national parks, it offers loads of hiking options and family vacation ideas.

Health and safety related parenting articles

Accidents tend to spike for children in summer, too – and Metro Parent’s June issue has advice to help. Our Michigan fireworks law makes it easier to buy powerful explosives, so it’s a good time to refresh kids on fireworks safety. Why not take it a step further and enroll kids in Camp 911? Hosted by Huron Valley Ambulance (Washtenaw County area), it ensures kids are prepared for emergencies.

Did you hear a new study found, for breast cancer survivors, breastfeeding can reduce your chances of recurrence? Find out more about what causes breast cancer and the benefits of breastfeeding. And finally, get a peek at the new Ronald McDonald House Detroit location – a place for family to stay while their critically ill children are hospitalized.

It’s all waiting for you in the June 2015 edition of Metro Parent. Don’t miss a single issue all year. Subscribe for FREE today!
