Choosing a quality vehicle is a priority for families, whether they’re in the midst of the minivan vs. SUV debate or scoping out a car for a newly licensed teen driver.
It helps to consider all the available data, which is why parents may want to check out J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study rankings for 2020.
The survey ranks cars in three categories:
- Highest quality: Based on consumer insights for the first 90 days
- Dependability: Based on consumer insights after three years of ownership
- Reliability: Based on a combination of quality and dependability scores
A look at the overall quality scene
Wondering which brands and vehicles lead the pack for 2020? Toyota, Chevy, Buick, Ford, Nissan and Lexus came home with the most awards.
Toyota scored the most with five awards and Chevy came in second with four. All the others tied for third with two awards each.
“The gap between these three brands and all others has widened considerably,” the release points out. “Remarkably, 16 of 18 models from Hyundai Motor Group rank in the top three in their respective segments. These vehicles tend to perform especially well in the areas of infotainment and other electronic components.”
Domestic brands Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Dodge and Buick performed above average, while Land Rover was rated the “most improved brand.” The top-rated new vehicle on the market for quality was the Porsche 911.
