Full transparency: I know Matt. He and I were college chums. And even back then I thought, “This guy is going to make someone a great husband and a wonderful dad.” He was that decent, that sensitive – even as a college kid. So it’s no surprise that when he had his firstborn, a girl named Addy, he took his new role as dad seriously.
“I thought ‘Oh, my gosh, I have a daughter,'” he says. “I was nervous, but I was ready for the adventure.”
When Addy was first born, they woke up together and had breakfast and lunch before he went off to his afternoon shift as a TV news producer at WDIV Channel 4. Food is something they still enjoy together, but now they’ve graduated to making spice rubs and smoking meat.
“We really like spending time together and we have similar interests,” Matt says.
They play games, like Addy’s new favorite, Egged On. They’ve been reading the Harry Potter books together. And Matt helps coach Addy’s baseball team.
“I just want to do whatever I can to help her grow up into an amazing woman,” Matt says. “I tell her that she’s smart and pretty. I want her to realize how amazing she is.”
- What he loves most about his daughter: “She has a wonderful imagination and a good heart.”
- What he wants for her: “To have her mother’s brain and confidence.”
