Virtual Summer Camps for Kids

Help your child experience something new, or learn more about the skill they love, with these virtual spring and summer break camps

Since parents have been stuck in the house with their kids for the past year due to COVID, many are looking forward to the spring and summer months when more restrictions can be lifted. There are some summer and spring camps that are meeting in-person, but there are also some virtual options too. 

Trying to keep your kids occupied this spring and summer break may be a challenge, but with the help of this list, hopefully it will make it a little easier.

Animal Camps

Virtual Spring Break Camp at Lincoln Park Zoo

March 29-April 2, 2021

  • Time: 10 a.m.-noon and 2-3 p.m.
  • Cost: $35/household, daily
  • Ages: Preschool-grade 4

There’s a different theme every day of the week, so campers can choose which days they would like to attend. They will enjoy hands on activities for their age group. Themes for the week include grasslands, wetlands, north woods, tropical rainforest and tundra.

Art Camps

Cranbrook Museum

June 14-18, 21-25, 28-30, July 1-2, 5-9, 12-16, 19-23, 26-30, Aug. 2-6 and 9-13, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Cost: $385-$2680
  • Ages: Grades 2-5

Participate in a “Zoom camp” with labeled art materials in a kit provided by the museum. Each week has a new theme. Camps will teach your little one how to be an independent learner and to get help online, if they need it. Curbside pickup available for supplies. Must have a computer or tablet to participate.

Grand Rapids Art Museum

Artful Discoveries and Adventures

June 14-18, 2021 (ages 4-6), June 21-25, 2021 (ages 7-9)

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $150
  • Ages: 4-6 and 7-9

Introduces campers to drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Will be able to virtually explore the art museum and create art projects each day with their camp kit.

Creating Authentic Connections

July 5-9, 2021 (ages 4-6) and July 12-16, 2021 (ages 7-9)

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $150
  • Ages: 4-6 and 7-9

Campers will create their own works of art, using the kit they’re given. They will be able to explore the art museum virtually and create paintings, drawings, sculptures, more.

Exploring the Third Dimension

July 19-23, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $150
  • Ages: 10-12

Campers will learn about other cultures and dimensions to create their own art pieces. They will collaborate with instructors and experiment with new materials in their art kit.

Art and Careers

July 26-30, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $150
  • Ages: 13-15

Learn about different careers in the art field and help your teen develop their own skills in fashion design, photography, textiles, printing and more.

Science Camps

Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum

Kaleidoscopes, Rainbows and Shadows

July 12-13, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $30/camper
  • Ages 4-5

Your little one will learn about light and color by making a kaleidoscope and do other fun activities. Registration begins in April.

Aerospace Expedition

Aug. 16-20, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $75/camper
  • Ages: 4-7

Kids will travel on a virtual aerospace ride and rocket out of this galaxy. Registration begins in April.

Full Steam Ahead

Aug. 16-20, 2021

  • Time: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $75/camper
  • Ages: 6-9

Little ones will be able to explore every letter of STEAM, while doing tons of activities with science, art and engineering. Try different experiments with household items. Registration begins in April.

Mission Impossible

Aug. 9-13, 2021

  • Time: 1-4 p.m.
  • Cost: $95/camper
  • Ages 6-9

There’s a different theme for each day of the week. Kids will learn about plants, animals and insects and do different experiments like what makes “pop” fizz. Registration begins in April.

Exploration Space

July 12-16, 2021

  • Time: 1-4 p.m.
  • Cost: $75/camper
  • Ages: 8-11

Virtual campers will use the museum’s Starry Night astronomy program, rocket building, rocket launching and astronaut program, from the comfort of their own home. Registration begins in April.

Kitchen Chemistry

Aug. 2-6, 2021

  • Time: 1-4 p.m.
  • Cost: $75/camper
  • Ages: 8-11

Your little one will learn the science of the kitchen — measuring and mixing ingredients together to see what happens. Registration begins in April.

Mission Impossible

July 26-30, 2021

  • Time: 1-4 p.m.
  • Cost: $95/camper
  • Ages: 10-12

Each day has a different science theme for the kids to focus on. They will learn aviation design, electric circuits, rocketry and more. Registration begins in April.

Western Michigan University’s Aviation Summer Camp

July 19-23, 2021

  • Time: Varies
  • Cost: $150
  • Ages: Grades 9-12

For students interested in an aviation career, this virtual camp will help them learn piloting, operation center, air traffic control, airports, maintenance repair and more. A kit full of supplies needed for the camp will be sent home.

Sports Camps

Soccer Stars United March Break Training Camp

March 22-26 and March 29-April 2, 2021

This virtual camp is for the more advanced player that wants to learn how to master ball handling, psychomotor skills and much more.

US Sports Camps

Basketball Camp Fundamental Skills

Coached by Joel Green, a former professional player, this camp’s focus is on strength, ball handling, athleticism and skills via Zoom. Campers will get a daily plan for improvement, customized video demos of skill development drills, accountability and more.

Basketball Camp Advanced Skills

March 22-April 2, 2021

  • Time: Varies
  • Cost: $95
  • Ages: 13-18

Coached by Shawn Stetson, vice president of NBC Basketball Camps and USA Basketball Gold Coach Certified, this camp focuses on strength, ball handling, athleticism and skills via Zoom. Campers will get a daily plan for improvement, customized video demos of skill development drills, leadership training, accountability and more.

Volleyball Camp Fundamental Camp

March 29-April 10, 2021

  • Ages: 11-15

Coached by James Finley, former D1 Head Volleyball Coach at Seattle University and Joe Amaral, Head Volleyball Coach at Skagit Valley College. This camp focuses on ball control, footwork, fitness, mindset and skill. Campers will get a daily plan for improvement, customized video demos of skill development drills, leadership training, accountability and more.

Volleyball Camp Advanced Camp

  • Ages: 14-18

This camp is coached by James Finley, former D1 Head Volleyball Coach at Seattle University and Joe Amaral, Head Volleyball Coach at Skagit Valley College. Campers focus on skill development, ball control technique, footwork patterns, fitness and mindset. Campers will get a daily plan for improvement, customized video demos of skill development drills, leadership training, accountability and more.

Theater Camps

Dance + Music

June 28-July 2, July 12-16, 19-23 and Aug 2-6, 2021

  • Ages: 7-15

Participants will work closely with the choreographer to create an original dance routine for their own music video. They will also be able to experiment with special effects and camera tricks. Campers need a computer and a portable filming device (phone or iPad) for the class.

Musical Theater

June 21-25, July 19-23 and Aug 2-6, 2021

  • Cost: $250/half day, $375/full day, $60/optional prop making bundle
  • Ages: 6-14

Kids will practice their acting skills, build props, make costumes and put on an end-of-camp performance. They will also create music and brainstorm their own plot for the story. Sibling discounts available. Need a computer for the class.

Prosthetics + Special Effects

June 14-18, July 5-9, July 12-16, Aug 2-6 and Aug. 16-20, 2021

Kit comes with special effects makeup and prosthetics creation bundle. Kids will use professional and household items to create the effects. Need a computer for this class.

Superhero Productions

  • Ages: 6-15

Participants will dream up their own superhero, create a storyboard and comic strip, and learn how to use their green screen to star in their own short film. Kit includes superhero costume making and prop kits, green screen and mini tripod. Need a computer and a portable filming device (phone or iPad) for the class.
