Company Offers Parents $10,000 to Name Baby 'Quinoa'

Naming kids after food is nothing new – but would you name your kid ‘Quinoa’ for $10,000 of free food at a restaurant chain? BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse is offering a gift card to one of its 163 restaurants to people who will name their kid after the trendy food, USA Today reports.

“Put down that book of baby names! Call your baby Quinoa & eat EnLIGHTened entrees at BJ’s for free,” the food chain Tweeted.

The chain is shamelessly promoting a new item on its menu – BJ’s Quinoa Bowls – and we think it’s a pretty hilarious promotion. Now, if someone actually does it, that’s a whole other story.

USA Today notes that ‘Quinoa’ must be the baby’s legal first name and parents cannot choose an alternate spelling.

“The winner will be chosen on Labor Day, so time is ticking for parents to name their baby Quinoa. Only one winner will be chosen, which, come to think of it, feels a little stingy. Any parent who names a newborn Quinoa deserves a payday of some sort,” USA Today notes.

Not pregnant? No worries. You can still get a coupon to BJ’s Restaurant if you change your name to ‘Quinoa’ on Twitter.

OK, this is clearly meant to be a joke, but I’m guessing that there is at least one person out there who will name their kid after the trendy food to get tons of free meals at this restaurant chain.

Imagine what it would be like for your kid to go through life with that name? Don’t do it! And if you’re planning on doing it, you better pick a decent middle name to call your kid instead.
