It was always tradition in my family for us to get new pajamas on Christmas Eve so we could be super comfy and festive while opening presents the next morning.
But the pajamas never matched. They all had Christmas or winter themes but we weren’t all dressed up as reindeer or elves. The line was drawn and there was no passing into that realm of foolery.
Sure, the pajamas are cute for photos to post on Instagram or Facebook, but they’re especially wonderful for a good laugh.
And don’t worry about hopping on Amazon or some obscure website to find that perfect matching set; for example, Target just came out with a new line of family pajamas – the family pooch is not excluded, either!
There are so many choices, too! Like a family of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! Or, if your family is more into Harry Potter, try this matching set!
And Target isn’t the only one – Kohl’s, Walmart and Macy’s are in on the trend too. You can’t escape the matching pajamas!
I’m not going to deny that I would do this with a family of my own because you know I will. They’re cute, comfy and shows a sense of family unity.
But at the same time, I feel like this is a huge capitalistic move preying on the vulnerable Christmas spirits of American families.
For example, the Harry Potter pajama set goes for $16.99 for a 10-year-old kid, $12.99 for a 4-year-old and then $24.99 for the adults. Depending on how big your family is that adds up – fast!
Also, let’s be realistic about the family photo you imagine yourself getting out of this. It will be a disaster just like every other one. The kids won’t sit still and the dog may just pee on the carpet, prompting you to just give up.
All of that struggle and grief just for an organized family portrait is not worth it, when a candid one could suffice and your children could just enjoy their Christmas break as kids – filled with joy, excitement and mystery.
