Mom’s Quest for Gut Health Solutions Inspires New Business for Kids Wellness

Fresh and Pressed Juice Bar in Troy seeks to empower, heal and satisfy the community.

All Kiara Smith wanted was to end her children’s suffering from constant stomach aches. They had B. infantis deficiency, which compromised their immune system development and put their nutrition at risk.

“Almost every day they were in pain,” Smith says.

After their pediatricians failed to find a treatment for their suffering from stomach aches and constipation, Smith knew she had to take matters into her own hands.

As she did, she also quickly discovered she was not alone in her quest to help her children. Nine out of 10 infants experience gut health issues, known as microbiome deficiency, according to a study done by Evolve Biosystems Inc.

“During that period, I spent a lot of time exploring different food options that they should be eating or should stay away from in their diets,” she says.

After months of research, she discovered the answer she had been looking for.

“Juicing was the cure,” she says. “I actually healed my children by juicing fruits and vegetables every day.”

And her kids, Navy, now 7, and Chivez “Vito” Smith, now 6, loved it, she says. “I would use bright colors like beets and different fruits and I would call it ‘Spidey juice’ after Spiderman to get my son to drink it. I would also make green juices with spinach or kale and fruit for my daughter and call it Hulk juice.”

Healing her family and others

Soon after making the juicing discovery, Smith began sharing tips and ideas for her homemade drinks on social media. The idea took off.

When positive responses and requests to make the juices for others flooded, she started selling the drinks from her kitchen at home.

“Once I started doing it from home it became too overwhelming,” Smith says. “I wasn’t able to manage it by myself. I would spend five to six hours just juicing.”

So, Smith decided it was time to grow the juicing company and to share her story with the rest of the world.

“I thought it would be awesome to offer this to the public and extend what I do in my home from my health preferences to using sustainable products, to buying organic,” she says.

New business opens in Troy

On July 21, she will open Fresh and Pressed Juice Bar in Troy. The grand opening is at 11 a.m. at 3622 Rochester Road. The business aims to “cater to busy parents and professionals seeking a healthy, delicious and sustainable option to keep themselves and their families energized and hydrated throughout the day.”

The thoughtfully constructed 1,260-square-foot juice bar space is a cozy, but airy atmosphere.

Fresh and Pressed Juice Bar offers a variety of organic and health-conscious juices in 12-ounce sustainable glass bottles, along with smoothies, smoothie bowls and on-the-go cups for kids.

“Our juicing company is different from others because it is family owned. This is not just someone selling their products. This is something good to nourish your body and soul,” she says.

The cups each feature affirmations for mental wellness. “Our goal is to offer support to people who are not health-driven,” she says. “We want to be that hope to them.”
