Profile

When The James, an independent senior living community in Ferndale, opens in the first quarter of 2019, it will be the only facility like it in the area. The apartment complex, located in a repurposed Catholic school, offers a variety of services, meals and activities conveniently located along the Woodward corridor.

The James apartment complex is housed in the former St. James School and Convent located between Eight Mile and Nine Mile roads on Woodward Avenue. The school, which was built in 1921, had been closed since 1971. A charter school occupied the building until 2012. St. James Church is still located next to The James.

The building, which has maintained the original look on the outside, is comprised of 104 one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging from 700-square feet to 1,500-square feet.

Katie Scharf, director of senior living at The James, says the inside of the building, including the apartment units, is completely remodeled and modern. The units feature walk-in closets, stone countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The James will also offer a number of amenities to its residents.

“We will have activities like fitness classes, upscale arts and crafts, trips outside of The James such as trips to the casino. We will also be partnering with a lot of community groups for various other activities,” she says.

The James will also have third-party, on-site home health care services, too. She says it will not have a clinical feel, but instead will be a fully-accessible, independent living facility with services.

Residents will be able to partake in two meals per day at The James. There is a continental breakfast each morning and a restaurant-like dining experience available each night for dinner. Scharf says lunch is optional. Residents can eat lunch at the cafe, located inside of The James, or dine in their apartments, as each of the units offers a full kitchen. For those who need to pick up a few groceries or other items, The James also has a convenience store.

To maintain the seniors’ independence, there is on-site parking for their personal vehicles, as well as available transportation. Residents are allowed to have pets in their units. Also, The James does not charge a second-person fee. Scharf says if a couple moves in, it’s the same price as a single resident.

The location is appealing to many residents, she adds, especially those who are established in the community. As the only senior independent living facility in Ferndale, The James is the perfect solution for those who have lived in the Ferndale or Royal Oak area and want to continuing living in their tight-knit community.

Located right along Woodward Avenue, Scharf says the facility is also convenient for families that live along the Woodward corridor or commute through the area for work. There are plenty of small businesses, shops and restaurants that appeal to residents, as well.

The James is also located near Beaumont Hospital, which is in Royal Oak.

“At The James, we have a lot of heart. We are resident oriented and we are focused on making this community a home,” Scharf says. “The facility is new, modern and upscale, but that’s not what it’s all about – it is about providing quality care, a fun lifestyle, community, security and comfort for our residents.”

The James is scheduled to open in the first part of 2019. Reservations are already being accepted. To learn more, visit The James website or call 248-554-3600.
