Profile

Since 1974, the Area Agency on Aging 1-B has advocated for, advised and assisted older adults, those with disabilities and the family members and friends who care for them. This nonprofit organization, also known as the AAA 1-B, serves people living in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties.

Those looking for services and programs – such as in-home care, Meals on Wheels, housing and transportation options, health and wellness classes and more – can call the AAA 1-B’s information and assistance line between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to speak with a representative. Roughly 60,000 people utilize this free help and referral telephone line each year, says Jenny Jarvis, the AAA 1-B’s chief of strategy and communications.

“We have our database that houses over 5,000 different programs and services,” Jarvis says, so each representative can send information on what services and programs are available in the caller’s area, or the older loved one needing assistance.

For older adults in the community, the AAA 1-B is the first place to call for free, unbiased help when it comes to understanding health insurance. Through the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP), certified volunteers can help explore Medicare health plan options, identify resources for prescription drug assistance, understand Medicaid eligibility and much more. Assistance is offered via phone by calling 800-803-7174 or through in-person counseling.

Whether you’re seeking details on a diabetes management plan, fall prevention classes, programs to help those living with cancer or ideas on managing chronic illnesses, the AAA 1-B offers information on where to find the right program for older adults in southeast Michigan.

Older adults who aren’t able to be left alone – or care for themselves – often rely on a friend or family member for help. However, being a caregiver can be exhausting and overwhelming. That’s why the AAA 1-B also offers classes and events – and referrals to support groups and other resources.

Through the six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers class, those caring for a loved one can learn more about ways to reduce their own stress, make tough decisions when it comes to care for their loved one and more. Topics during each class, which runs 90 minutes, include hiring in-home help, making legal and financial decisions and more. You must register in advance for free classes by calling 833-262-2200 or emailing wellnessprograms@aaa1b.com.

From the caregiver looking for advice and information on caring for their loved one to the older adult in the community who is hoping to remain in his or her own home but needs some assistance, the AAA 1-B can provide the tools and resources to help make life a lot easier.
