Why visit Ann Arbor?

Ann Arbor is a lively city with a perfect mix of small-town charm and big-city culture. It’s the proud home of one of the top public universities in the country, which offers the town a wide variety of events throughout the year, from world-class performances to public lectures and festivals. 

Beyond its academic appeal, Ann Arbor — or A2 to many of us — has a downtown that’s quaint and walkable, and packed with boutiques, independent coffee shops, art galleries and cozy eateries

If you’re traveling with kids, one of the best parts about Ann Arbor is how much there is to explore without the need for a car. Walk along Main Street and keep your eyes peeled for some fun little toy stores! One local favorite is Mudpuddles, a classic toy store that offers an array of games, puzzles and children’s books. Another great spot is Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tearoom, which, while not exclusively a toy store, offers a great selection of gifts and toys alongside a tearoom where families can take a break.

Ann Arbor is close to Detroit, making it an easy and convenient destination for families who want a change of pace without venturing too far from home. It’s a great place to introduce kids to the joys of exploring a new city without the hassle of long travel times.

Fun pit stops along the way

If you’re coming from metro Detroit, Ann Arbor is just a short drive away. The quickest route is 43.4 miles via I-96 West and M-14 West. For a more scenic route, take M-10 North/John C. Lodge Freeway and M-14 West, adding about 10 miles to your trip.

  • Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation: The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is an expansive museum celebrating American history and ingenuity. Its interactive exhibition hall features 18 touchscreens and a wide range of activities and games, offering an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. Seasonally, be sure to visit Greenfield Village for a full historic experience.
  • Michigan Flight Museum: A short drive off the path to Ann Arbor is the aviation museum, specializing in WWII history, featuring exhibits and offering pre-booked flights aboard classic bombers.
  • Matthaei Botanical Gardens: This expansive site includes a visitor center, gift shop and a conservatory that showcases an impressive collection of plants.

Where to eat in Ann Arbor

For a family-friendly breakfast or brunch, Zingerman’s Deli is a must-visit. Known for its sandwiches and bakery items, it’s a local institution that offers hearty meals and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Looking for vegetarian and vegan choices? Visit the Detroit Street Filling Station for an exclusively veg menu. Another favorite is Stray Hen Cafe, a cozy breakfast spot known for its fresh, hearty meals and kid-friendly options like pancakes and cinnamon rolls.

When it’s time for lunch or dinner, head over to Frita Batidos, a Cuban-inspired spot offering a variety of creative burgers (called fritas) and creamy milkshakes. For something a bit more upscale but still family-friendly, The Chop House offers fine dining with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere featuring steaks, seafood and fresh sides.

Ann Arbor also has a growing craft beer scene, with several breweries offering root beer and other non-alcoholic beverages for kids while the adults enjoy a local brew. Visit the newly-opened hear.say brewing + theater for a unique experience. (Note that the improv and comedy are typically PG-13+, but kids are welcome if accompanied by an adult.)  Grizzly Peak Brewing Company is famous for its fried cheese curds, something no kid can turn down!
