Meet Up, Eat Up in Macomb County

The Department of Education Summer Food Program combats childhood hunger through the Meet Up, Eat Up program. Get details on this program and where to find sites in Macomb County.

Many kids across southeast Michigan depend on school-provided lunch as their only source of a consistent meal — but that resource disappears when summer vacation hits.

The Michigan Department of Education Summer Food Service program is called Meet, Up and Eat Up. It provides hundreds of sites where kids 18 and under can access healthy breakfasts and lunches during the summer break from school in a fun and welcoming environment.

“These programs truly are a blessing for parents as well as the students that get to participate in them,” says Carolyn Thomas, Child Nutrition Consultant at the Macomb Intermediate School District. “Children are provided lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and milk.

In addition, these sites also offer academic summer school programming, educational programming and community-based activities.

A law was passed by the United State Department of Agriculture that if you are considered a rural area in the state, you are allowed to receive a different service model to the program.

“The reason they’re doing it for rural areas is because the large geographical areas of those districts make it difficult for those communities to physically come use the services,” says Thomas.

The two school districts that are considered to be rural in Macomb County are Armada Area Schools and Romeo School District. Those two locations will allow parents to come pick up the meals ahead of time for the week and take them home to their children.

“No identification is involved for these non-congregate meal services and you do not have to live in the community to take advantage of it,” says Thomas. “They can also pick up meals for other people in their neighborhood.”

The regular Meet Up, Eat Up sites are typically located at schools, places of worship, nonprofit organizations, parks, government sites and more. These sites ask that you eat the meals on site.
