Does your family dig watching movies under the stars? Take them to the mother of all outdoor movie events this summer during Movie Nights in the D events at Campus Martius Park. They run every Saturday through Aug. 24, 2019.
Since the start 10 years ago, these outdoor movie events, which are presented by Faygo, attract some 2.5 million visitors downtown for screenings of Oscar-winning flicks, documentaries and kids’ movies.
“We showcase award-winning, family-friendly blockbuster films,” says David Cowan, director of public spaces and programming for the Downtown Detroit Partnership. “We have a variety of films, including PG movies for families.”
The kid-friendly films this year, include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on July 13, Mary Poppins Returns, featuring the Michigan Philharmonic on July 27 and Ralph Breaks the Internet on Aug. 10.
Adults can watch The Upside (rated PG-13) on Aug. 3 and Bohemian Rhapsody (PG-13) on Aug. 13.
“We have a lot of diversity at the movie events and we tried to choose films that would appeal to many different demographics,” Cowan explains.
Of course, movies aren’t the only reason to attend these events. The Downtown Detroit Partnership has also teamed up with several organizations to offer even more fun.
“We’ve got a partnership with Universal Kids, so we’ll be offering a “Where’s Waldo” event a half an hour prior to the screening of the kids’ features,” Cowan says. Two “Ready, Set, Wander” events, during which kids can use clues to search for keys buried on the beach. If you find a key, you can redeem it for a prize.
And for the adults: The Detroit Film Society explains important details or fun facts about the film before it runs.
In addition, families can enjoy all of the amenities that the iconic park has to offer, including the beach, lawn, pop-up bars and nearby restaurants – plus they can treat themselves to fresh popcorn, courtesy of Jetta’s Popcorn, or drink a delicious Faygo.
Movie Nights in the D happen at Campus Martius Park in Detroit every Saturday through Aug. 24, 2019, starting at 6 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.
