Is Playtime Important to Cats and Dogs?

Sarah, of Rochester, asks and Mike of Premier Pet Supply has the answer.

Few things are more exciting than getting a new pet, but it’s also a huge undertaking. Unfortunately, as time passes and the newness of the pet tapers off, it’s not uncommon for us to let our responsibilities taper off a bit, too. In order to burn off the abundance of extra energy in puppies and kittens, many people make playtime a priority for their young pets, but it’s equally as important to keep that up as our furry friends age.

Approximately 53 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Exercising or playing with your animal can ward off obesity and a myriad of other health problems. Playtime will also help you and your animal bond.

For solo playtime for dogs, interactive feeder toys – specifically the ones you fill with kibble – can keep your dog’s mind sharp and busy, while also rewarding them. Keep in mind that a busy dog is less likely to get into mischief than a bored dog. Cats learn basic survival skills through playing. Toys with catnip can be a great option, too, since the herb can be very alluring to felines.

The basis of physical activity and exercise for pets is dependent on an animal’s diet, and the ability to indulge in strenuous play begins there, too. So, like humans, it’s important your pet have a healthy, well-balanced diet. This will give them the proper energy to fuel their playtime sessions.

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local pet store if you have questions on this or any pet-related topic.
