Pre- and post-game fun

One of the best parts of Michigan game day is the festive atmosphere around Ann Arbor. Families can stroll through tailgates near the stadium or explore the nearby campus and its surroundings before walking to the Big House.

Here are some family-friendly tailgates to check out:

If tailgates aren’t your family’s thing, here are some other things to try around Ann Arbor:

Top food options to keep you going

Inside the Big House, you’ll find traditional stadium fare — hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels and nachos — plus sweet treats and vegetarian choices. Keep in mind cash isn’t accepted at any of the concession stands.

Outside the stadium, Ann Arbor’s food scene shines. Families might enjoy a pre-game brunch at Fleetwood Diner or post-game pizza at Pizza House. For something sweet after a big win, Blank Slate Creamery has delicious ice cream in classic and unique flavors.

While outside food and drink aren’t allowed in the stadium, you can bring empty water bottles to fill at stations inside.

Key tips for attending a Wolverines game

  • Parking: Arrive early, as lots near the stadium fill fast. Expect to pay around $50 for close spots, or save money by parking farther away and walking or using public transportation.
  • Volume: The Big House is loud, so bring ear protection for little ones who may be overwhelmed by crowd cheers and marching band music.
  • Traditions: Michigan Stadium roars with chants and other traditions. The Michigan Marching Band’s pregame show, the team running under the “Go Blue” banner and crowd chants like “Let’s Go Blue” are just some of the rituals to expect during a game.

Spend the night in Wolverine country

For families looking to spend more time in Ann Arbor, there are plenty of family-friendly places to stay:

  • Around the Big House: Hotels like The Kensington Hotel and The Holiday Inn are just a short drive away and offer perks like breakfast and pools.
  • Downtown Ann Arbor: There are a ton of Airbnbs in the downtown Ann Arbor area that will give you and your family a cozy home base during your stay.
  • Nearby options: Ypsilanti or other nearby suburbs are additional choices that may be easier on the budget while still keeping you close to the action.
