Sandusky, Ohio has so much to offer families, you may not even think about straying far from Cedar Point or your resort of choice. But if you’re in the mood to try something new and different, here are some suggestions for unique sports to visit in Sandusky, or not too far away.
Unique things for families to do in Sandusky
Merry-Go-Round Museum
It’s always fun to ride a merry-go-round, but these amusement park staples are historically significant, too. The Merry-Go-Round Museum is unique because it is housed inside a former post office building which celebrates the late 1980s release of a stamp that featured a carousel horse from Cedar Point, of all places. Yes, you can ride a carousel while you are there. Kids up to 14 get reduced price entry and littles under 4 are free.
Maritime Museum of Sandusky
Get to know Sandusky’s backstory through the maritime history of the Sandusky Bay area at the unique Maritime Museum of Sandusky. There’s a lot to know about this area, including its significant role in the Underground Railroad.
Ghostly Manor Thrill Center
Ready for some scary fun? The Ghostly Manor Thrill Center has a lot of screams all in one location. Visit the haunted house, try the escape room, play 3D mini golf, play the Hologate virtual reality game, enjoy the Laser Maze, fly through the XD Motion Theater Ride, then try rollerskating. There are also bounce houses and a play area for those 12 and under.
Crystal Cave
Across the water in Put-in-Bay lies Crystal Cave, where you can find the world’s largest geode. It’s a must-see for the rock and crystal lovers in your family. You can tour the cave for a fee and learn about the role the cave played during Prohibition, if you happen to be visiting the nearby winery.
Marblehead Lighthouse State Park
Where there is lakeshore, there are beautiful views and lighthouses. Marblehead Lighthouse State Park is especially picturesque and it’s the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. You can climb to top during the summer and take in the gorgeous sights of Lake Erie and the islands in the distance. Pack a picnic lunch and plan to soak up some sunshine at this unique spot on the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula.
Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve
Close to the lighthouse is a nature preserve on the limestone quarried land of the Marblehead Peninsula. And the Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve is extra special because it was established to protect the only natural population of the Lakeside daisy in the U.S. This threatened species is “one of Ohio’s most spectacular wildflowers,” according to the Ohio DNR. Visit in the first half of May for the best show of these yellow wildflowers.
