Where Am I? Series Introduces Macomb County Kids to Stories from Their Community

This new reading series from Great Start Macomb aims to instill a love of reading in kids by taking them to interesting spots in the county through storytelling.

Macomb County is full of fun spots for families and each one comes with a unique story. Now, your family can explore those stories by participating in the new Where Am I? series.

This free series, created by Great Start Macomb, aims to teach kids to love reading and get them out in their community by introducing them to stories related to different locations in the county.

“Macomb County is filled with interesting locations in every community and our team really wanted to highlight that each community has something special to offer families and encourage exploration of these locations,” says Kelly Isrow, the Great Start Collaborative Coordinator and co-creator of the series.

“We hope that our mystery spots in the county will grab the attention of our youngest reader and inspire them to dive into the stories shared and excite them about seeking out new stories at their local libraries.”

In addition, Isrow hopes the series will also inspire kids to use their imaginations and maybe write a story of their own.

“Exploring their community and the world around them is a great way to start a story,” she adds.

How it works

Where Am I? is an eight-week program that can be accessed through the Macomb County Great Start Parent Coalition Facebook page every Friday night at 6 p.m. July 9-Aug. 12, 2021.

Families without access to Facebook may also request the story recordings be emailed to them by emailing the Great Start Parent Liaison at eschneider@misd.net.

Once you listen to the story, which is themed to that week’s location, you are encouraged to take a trip out to the location to learn more about it.

Participants can also enter to win prizes by posting a picture of their family at the location on social media, with the hashtag #MacombGreatStart, or emailing the photo to eschneider@misd.net.

Winners will be selected at 9 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2021.

“From parks to art centers and cider mills to chocolate factories, the creative locations featured in Where Am I? will surely inspire families to get out and explore their community and the county,” Isrow says.
