Creative Burger Recipes for National Hamburger Month

Fire up the grill! May is National Hamburger Month, and these yummy ideas will help parents and kids celebrate the summer outdoor eating season.

Can you guess how many hamburgers Americans eat each year? (Hint: it’s not in the millions.) Forty billion burgers! Today.com estimates that’s 150 burgers for each one of us. With so many burgers making their way onto our dinner plates (and picnic tables), it’s no wonder that hamburger recipes have come a long way. They’re topped – and made – with just about anything!

Add a dash of Mexican zing with the spicy guacamole burger recipe. And who says you have to use beef? Try ground pork that’s spiked with barbecue sauce and topped with vinegary coleslaw. Go vegetarian with a stuffed Portobello mushroom burger. Or for a truly unique burger, try a Michigan original with The Fly Trap’s red chile salmon burger.

All-American Hamburgers

For traditional fare, this all-American hamburger recipe from Taste of Home has extra ingredients to keep it juicy while grilling. Mix finely chopped onion, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce and mustard into the ground beef before forming the patties. Have cheese and tomato slices ready, along with lettuce, to finish off your burgers. Don’t forget the ketchup and mustard!

Spicy Guacamole Burger

Avocados love beef! Play up this great combo by making this spicy guacamole burger from What’s Gaby Cooking. After grilling the patties, prepare the guacamole with a dousing of fresh lime juice and fresh chopped chives. Add a heaping scoop of guacamole to the burgers and serve hot.

Barbecued Pork Burgers with Slaw

Channel North Carolina BBQ with these barbecued pork burgers with slaw from Gourmet. The meat is mixed with barbecue sauce before going on the grill. Meanwhile, make coleslaw with green cabbage, mayonnaise, milk, carrots, chives and vinegar to pack on top of the cooked burger. Sweet, savory and delicious.

Cheese Steak Sliders

Forget big burgers – make ’em mini! This recipe for cheese steak sliders from Rachael Ray tastes like a cross between a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and a traditional hamburger. Make the patties small enough to fit into dinner rolls for a bite-sized meal your kids will love.

Stuffed Portobello Burgers

Go vegetarian on the grill with these stuffed portobello burgers from Woman’s Day. Mushrooms have a surprisingly meaty flavor. Dress them up with thinly sliced red onion, fontina cheese, sliced tomato and plenty of fresh basil. Instead of the traditional bun, serve these burgers on ciabatta bread.

The Fly Trap’s Red Chile Salmon Burger

Have you been to The Fly Trap in Ferndale? This neighborhood favorite garnered national praise when it was featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. While Guy Fieri raved about the pho soup, the restaurant is well known for its burgers. Try The Fly Trap’s red chile salmon burger recipe at home, or head over to Woodward Avenue for a night out with your family!
