Detroit Cookie Co. is making kids’ dreams come true, one cookie at a time, at a tasty Ferndale shop that just opened in late August.
Baking is a long-time passion for founder Lauren Roumayah thanks to her mother, who made sugar and oatmeal cookies with her as a child.
“In the morning, she would bake cookies for our lunches. It was a sign of love,” says Roumayah, 25, who started out in cookie wholesaling online. “It was something that we did together. My best memories are baking with her.”
In fact, Roumayah, who has a degree in fashion merchandising, says she’s “classically trained by my mom.” And her wares have Detroit flair to spare.
Her signature recipes, which run $2-$4 each, feature ingredients like Better Made chips, Michigan dried cherries and Dave’s Sweet Tooth toffee.
“We try to incorporate really unique flavors,” says Roumayah, who’s originally from Northville and now lives in Royal Oak. “Anything that you grew up (with) in your childhood but with really unique spins.”
Her top pick? The Brown Butter Pecan. It’s her and her mother’s favorite, best served with a cup of coffee in the morning. “It’s the cookie that you have in the winter and you just get this fuzzy feeling when you eat it.”
Besides cookies, Roumayah’s dessert café serves up delectable cheesecake, pies, house-roasted coffee and Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream.
“When you walk in, (I want) all your most delicious dreams to come true,” she says.
