Lucy’s Sticky Ham Sandwiches Recipe

Looking for a yummy little lunch for the kiddos? These sticky ham sandwiches, from the book Siriously Delicious by Siri Daly, are a prime choice.

Creative lunch ideas are a hot commodity come September. So don’t settle for something bland! Give your kids a back-to-school lunchbox surprise with this delectable spin on the classic ham and cheese sandwich. This recipe for sticky ham sandwiches is sweet, savory and something the whole family can sink their teeth into – whether it joins your roster of fun sack lunch ideas or perhaps does duty as a midday weekend meal.

Ingredients

  • 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp. dry mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. light brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds
  • 1 (12-ounce) package small sweet Hawaiian rolls
  • 1 lb. sliced deli ham
  • 1 lb. Swiss cheese, sliced

Directions

1. Bring the butter, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar and poppy seeds to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium-high. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside.

2. Split the rolls. Layer the ham and cheese slices evenly on the bottom halves of the rolls, then cover with the top halves of the rolls. Place the rolls in a single layer in an 11-by-7-inch baking dish (it helps if they fit snugly in there). Pour the sauce over the buns, using a spatula to make sure they are all coated. Cover with aluminum foil, and chill for at least one hour or up to overnight.

3. Preheat the oven to 325 F. Bake the sandwiches, covered, for 10 minutes. Uncover and bake until the sandwiches are hot and the cheese is melted, about 10 more minutes.
