Red Velvet Cupcake Recipe

Is there a zombie in the house? They’ll come crawling out of the woodwork – or at least the kids will – when you bake a batch of these Halloween-prime red velvet cupcakes. The recipe is fresh from UK graphic-designer-turned-spooky-cupcake-baker Lily Vanilli‘s first book, A Zombie Ate My Cupcake! 25 Deliciously Weird Cupcake Recipes (Cico Books, 2010).

It’s the perfect base for her “Blood Stained Brains” cupcake recipe – which also features pink-tinted butter cream frosting piped on top in a zigzag, brain-like manner. She fills in the cracks a gory “cherry sauce” sure to be a fun gross-out! You can find the recipes for the frosting and sauce in the October 2010 Metro Parent print issue.

Then, hang onto this from-scratch recipe for any of your other cake-baking creations throughout the year (Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, anyone?). It’s a sweet and versatile choice for a tasty family treat.
