Ever wonder what movie Andy from Toy Story saw that made him want to beg his mom for the new, intergalactic toy on his birthday? Now you can see it for yourself. Enjoy a time-traveling adventure with one of your favorite Disney Pixar characters, Buzz Lightyear.
Legendary Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear travels to infinity and beyond and winds up stranded on a new planet by no fault of his own. He tries his best to make it back home by testing the hyperspace fuel and ends up traveling four years into the future each time. On his last trip back, he comes face to face with Emperor Zurg and must defeat him in order to get back home. Here are some lessons to discuss with your kids:
- Never give up. Buzz traveled to space over and over again until he got it right. He was persistent and never gave up on the mission.
- Accept help from others. The beginning of the movie showed Buzz not wanting anyone’s help and trying to do everything on his own. In the end, he needed help from others to succeed.
- Be open to new friends. Buzz always worked by himself, but when he was given a robot support cat, Sox, he found an unexpected friend in him. He also teams up on his last trip back with a few people that he may not have given the time of day to because they were “rookies.”
- Challenge yourself. When Buzz teamed up with the rookies, Izzy, Mo and Darby, they didn’t know anything about being a space ranger. Izzy didn’t even like going into space, but she challenged herself to overcome that fear.
Movie-inspired activities
Now that you’ve watched Lightyear, try out these screen-free activities with your kids.
- Design your own space ranger suit. Use felt, foam sheets and more to create your child’s own Buzz Lightyear suit. Try this no-sew costume by Fun at Home with Kids.
- Create your own fuel composition. Check out Little House of Science and use sugar and water to stack colors on top of each other to make your own fuel composition.
- Print out Lightyear coloring pages. Children will enjoy coloring the scenes from the actual movie. Coloring pages are provided by Lola Lambchops.
- Make your own rocket. Using cardboard, you and your little ones can create your own space ship. Try this cardboard rocket tutorial by Create in the Chaos.
- Make a meat sandwich. Buzz comes back after years and years and sees that people are now putting the meat on the outside of the sandwich and a piece of bread inside. Your kids will get a kick out of it.
