BATS: Superheroes of the Night Exhibit at Cranbrook Institute of Science

Ever take the chirping, winged rodents that cut through the night sky in your own backyard for granted? BATS: Superheroes of the Night, an exhibit that features half a dozen different species of bats, opens at Cranbrook Institute of Science, Sept. 26, 2015-June 19, 2016, to show visitors why bats are super – and why you should strive to keep these cool creatures around.

First, visitors begin their superhero training. Learn about bats’ specialties that help keep the environment healthy. Then, meet the night fliers’ most notorious villains and learn what you can do to help combat bats’ nemeses, starting by making your own backyard bat friendly.

September through December, familiarize yourself with the superheroes: vampire bats, straw-colored fruit bats, Egyptian fruit bats, short-tailed bats, big-brown bats and Jamaican leaf-nosed bats. Starting in January, the vampires will be substituted with Malayan flying foxes.

Interactive components allow visitors to hang like a bat, discover what a bat feels like, scurry through a cave, take epic superhero bat selfies and more.

There’s a batty world in store for those who visit Cranbrook to see this exhibit. Tickets range $6.50-$13/adults, $5.50-$9.50/ages 3 and under, free/under 2.

The exhibit is open during Cranbrook’s regular hours:

  • Tuesday-Thursday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Friday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Sunday: noon-4 p.m.
