BioBlitz at the Cranbrook Institute of Science

Interested in exploring Michigan’s wildlife? Visit the Cranbrook Institute of Science for its first-ever BioBlitz event Aug. 7-8, 2015, in Bloomfield Hills, and get a closer look at the bugs roaming and plants growing in your own backyard.

Traditionally, a BioBlitz is an event where scientists and individuals come together for a 24-hour period to discover and study as many wildlife species and plants as they can. Splitting the event into two days, this weekend will be filled with sun-kissed plants and countless shades of green. BioBlitz allows visitors to work alongside local scientists to explore and get a better understanding of the tiny crawlers and other life forms existing on the planet.

From an evening bat walk to morning bird walks, this event allows you to bond with the little ones on a memorable journey into the wild. There will also be a group of presenters who will be a part of a live animal program showcasing our favorite late night animal, the owl.

In between taking pictures, watch your children transform into little scientists for the day identifying and recording observations on different types of birds and breathtaking wild flowers. Before you leave, your family will have a better understanding of biodiversity in southeast Michigan.

Prepare to be enchanted by the beauty of nature with a variety of scheduled tours offered from the creek discovery and amphibian exploration to the insect search and woodland walk.

Get a whiff of the smell of nature at the family-friendly event and don’t forget to bring your camera to take pictures. The event, which is free, runs 5-10 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, with various activities happening throughout the day. Visit online for a full schedule of lineups for each day.
