Holidays at the Detroit Historical Museum

Celebrate Christmas and New Year's with extended hours at the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum Dec. 26, 2015-Jan. 3, 2016.

The Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum are offering families a special gift for the holiday season: extended hours! From Dec. 26, 2015-Jan. 3, 2016 the two institutions will be open longer, giving kids more time to explore the fun and informational features.

Starting the day after Christmas, the Detroit Historical Museum in midtown will be open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. each day (including Monday, Dec. 28), and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle will be open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. Note: both museums will be closed New Year’s Day.

Each museum has something unique for families to discover. At the Detroit Historical Museum, find a special Glancy Trains Show 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 27, featuring model trains and accessories from local dealers and collectors. Be sure to swing by the permanent favorites, too, like Streets of Old Detroit, Kid Rock Music Lab, Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad, Detroit: The Arsenal of Democracy – and several others. Come out from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 31 for the free Noon Year’s Eve family event to ring in 2016. Kids can enjoy crafts, hot chocolate and cookies while awaiting the balloon drop at noon.

Looking to fit some maritime amusement in? Head to Belle Isle to visit the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, which has permanent exhibits like Built by the River, an S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald anchor, the vintage Miss Pepsi hydroplane and even a pilothouse.

Admission to both museums is free, though admission to the Glancy Trains Show at the Detroit Historical Museum on Dec. 27, 2015 is $2 per person.

So if you catch the kids whining about how bored they are (despite those new toys they just got from Santa), swing by these cultural institutions and take advantage of the extended hours and Detroit history right in your backyard. The kids may be out of school for the holiday break, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do some learning, too!
