Metro Detroit Family Events That Make Us So Excited for 2024

Mark your calendars because there is a lot for us to look forward to this year in metro Detroit!

2024 is here and we couldn’t be more excited!

There are so many great family-friendly events happening this year – some are even new events! Whether you’re looking for something free or cheap to do that won’t break the bank, something educational, or even just a fun festival to attend, we’ve got you covered!

Check out our list below for some that you will want to make sure you put down on your calendar.

January 2024

Frost Festival in Downtown Rochester

Jan. 19-20, 2024

  • Address: Downtown Rochester area
  • Cost: Free

Families can see downtown Rochester transformed into a frosty wonderland at this new event. There will be Under the Sea themed ice sculptures, a shopping and dining BINGO game, marshmallow roasting, competitions and more.

Wicked

Long before Dorothy arrived in Oz, Glenda and the Wicked Witch were friends. Find out what happened that turned them into mortal enemies years later.

BRRRminham Blast in Downtown Birmingham

Jan. 27, 2024

Families can enjoy a brand-new winter event in downtown Birmingham that will feature marshmallow roasting, zip lining, food trucks, entertainment and more.

Disney On Ice presents Magic In The Stars

Feb. 15-18, 2024

See Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Elsa, Anna, Raya, Buzz, Woody, Lighting McQueen and more as they perform in this ice skating show.

Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas

Feb. 17-Sept. 15, 2024

This traveling exhibition introduces how current thinking about dinosaur biology has changed over the past two decades and highlights current research by scientists from the American Museum of Natural History and other leading paleontologists around the world. See a full-size cast skeleton leg of a Tyrannosaurus rex, two life-size models of Protoceratops—one skeleton, the other fully fleshed out, a life-size three-horned Triceratops skull and more.

Paw Patrol: Adventure Play

Feb. 17-April 28 2024

Join Marshall, Chase, Skye, Rubble, Everest, Rocky, Zuma and Tracker in a series of hands-on, educational adventures in the world of Adventure Bay. Children will overcome challenges and learn how to work as a team in this new, play-based exhibit.

Monster Jam

Feb. 24-25, 2024

Detroit fans will witness a fierce battle for the event championship with each skilled athlete tearing up the dirt with gravity-defying feats in 12,000-pound Monster Jam trucks.

March 2024

Brick Fest Live

March 2-3, 2024

This LEGO event features hands-on attractions for all ages, including life-size models, a giant brick pit, special guest appearances, a glow zone, graffiti wall and more.

Paw Patrol Live! The Great Pirate Adventure

March 2-3, 2024

Join the Paw Patrol pals for a live action stage show on the high seas, based on the top-rated animated preschool series.

Bluey’s Big Play at the Fox Theatre

Fans of all ages will get to see Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli as the Heelers embark on their very first live theater show. It will feature live actors, puppetry and iconic sets.

Head to Historic Greektown for their 22nd Annual Detroit Greek Independence Parade, which features 60 Greek-American organizations, churches, community groups, businesses, and other participants.

See this performance which is a celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit at the Fox Theatre.

Art Birmingham

May 11-12, 2024

Peruse the works from juried artists at this 43rd-time show that takes place on the street surrounding Shain Park, in downtown Birmingham.

Motor City Comic Con

Ann Arbor African American Festival

This annual fest features live music, dance performances, magic show, vendor booths and more. Also, enjoy a kid’s corner with activities.

Ferndale Pride

June 1, 2024

  • Cost: Free

This festival celebrates the progress made by the LGBTQIA community through music, stage performances, vendors, a kid’s area, food trucks and more. There is also a children’s area that hosts a variety of activities for kids of all ages including a confetti drop, climbing wall, Reading with Royalty and a creativity zone.

Ford Fireworks

June 24, 2024

Recognized as one of America’s largest and most magnificent fireworks displays, this popular event, which is produced by The Parade Company, is a spectacular summer tradition in the city and is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of spectators. The fireworks are shot off from three barges on the Detroit River. Make sure to get there early for the perfect spot to watch!

The Goonies in Concert

June 26-27, 2024

Enjoy a screening of the classic film about group of misfits on a search for long-lost treasure, accompanied by music performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

July 2024

Blake’s Lavender Festival

Blake’s announced new extended dates for summer 2024 for their Lavender Festival. Shop from over 200 artisans, sip on lavender lemonade, enjoy lavender-themed treats, a children’s tent with lots of activities, DIY workshops, free train ride to the lavender field and more.

Sounds & Sights Festival

July 26-27, 2024

  • Address: Downtown Chelsea area
  • Cost: Free

There will be live music at the social tent, car show, farmers market, kid zone, chalk art, art market, food court and more at this annual.

August 2024

Blake’s Sunflower Festival

Michigan Renaissance Festival

Fair maids and merry men take a step back to the 16th century for jousting tournaments, comedy and theater shows, music, games and “real” mythological creatures. Each weekend is themed so check on it before you head out.

Michigan State Fair

Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2024

Walk the midway, see the circus, ride carnival rides, see demonstrations and more at the state fair that dates back to 1849. Other attractions include livestock shows, live entertainment, carnival eats and more.

Arts, Beats & Eats

Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2024

  • Cost: Ticket prices coming soon

Enjoy art at the juried fair, eats from food trucks and beats that include live music and more. The kid’s zone will have arts and craft, bounce houses and interactive, educational and fun performances all weekend.

Metro Boat Show

Sept. 12-15, 2024

Check out the boats, live music, kid’s zone, lawn games and more. Kid’s zone has crafts, water fun and face painting.

October 2024

A2 Artoberfest

Oct. 12-13, 2024

Explore the work of over 100 jury-selected fine artists at this event. There will also be live entertainment, food, drinks, shopping and more.

November 2024

America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Celebrating its 98th year, the parade has all of your favorite floats, balloons, marching bands and entertainment.

December 2024

Orion Lighted Christmas Parade

Dec. 7, 2024

  • Address: Downtown Lake Orion
  • Cost: Free

Check out the state’s largest lighted Christmas parade. It encourages businesses downtown to light up and decorate their storefronts.
