New Water Features Revealed At Chandler Park Family Aquatic Center in Detroit

Wayne County and the county’s executive Robert Ficano will be unveiling the improved Chandler Park Family Aquatic Center June 14, featuring new water features for families to enjoy this summer.

“Having fun and keeping cool are what we all like to do in the summertime,” Ficano says. “The Chandler Park Aquatic Center is a clean, safe and affordable way for parents and their children to enjoy the best of summer, and this year, we’ve added three new features that add to the whole splash experience.”

New features

The new additions to the Aquatic Center include the 15-foot-tall Splash Tower with four water-dumping buckets, an “Under-Brella,” where water can be seen rolling down in fun patterns from the inside of a dome, and Air Sticks, which shoot water from the ground.

Enjoying the park

Although Chandler Park closed earlier this year – along with about four dozen other parks throughout Wayne County – the Aquatic Center remains open. When Ficano proposed closing the Aquatic Center in 2011 to save the county money, there was outcry of support at rallies and public hearings to keep it open.

The Aquatic Center, now in its 16th season, helps southeast Michigan residents beat the heat by offering a wave pool, two water slides and a “Splish Splash Land” just for the kiddies.

Learn to swim this summer! Lessons for all ages are available, pre-registration required. Lifeguards are on duty, and fully staffed first aid is always available. After swim lessons, stop by a concession stand for food and refreshments.

The Aquatic Center, located at 12600 Chandler Park Drive in Detroit, is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 14, 2013 through Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2, 2013. Entrance to the Aquatic Center for Wayne County residents costs $2 for children under 2, $5 for ages 3 to 12, and $7 for adults.
