What you need to know about Belle Isle

  • Hours: 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily
  • Cost: $14/Michigan-registered vehicles annual pass, free for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Getting there: You can drive, walk or bike across the bridge or take public transportation

Best things to do with kids at Belle Isle

  • Discover aquatic wonders at Belle Isle Aquarium. Did you know this gem is the oldest original aquarium in North America? You’ll be able to see many species such as coral reef fish, electric eels, freshwater stingrays and others.
  • Explore maritime wonders at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. This museum celebrates Great Lakes history with one of the largest collections of model ships and a variety of exhibits, lectures, and programs.
  • Meet fascinating creatures at the Belle Isle Nature Center. Operated by the Detroit Zoo, this center is perfect for seeing amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates, plus a playground nearby adds extra fun.
  • Splash and relax at Belle Isle Beach. This beach is a must while visiting in the warmer months. There are bathrooms and a changing area, which makes it convenient if you are spending the whole day on the island.
  • Race down the giant slide! This 40-foot-tall slide has six lanes and you slide down on a potato sack. Individuals must be 48 inches tall to ride.
  • Snap photos by iconic Belle Isle landmarks. Make sure to take photos by the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse, the James Scott Memorial Fountain and on Sunset Point.
  • Stroll through the gardens at the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory will be closed through early December 2024, but the outdoor gardens are now open Wednesday-Sunday.

Tips for families visiting Belle Isle

  • Map out your day for a smooth visit. Plan out your day beforehand by checking the map of Belle Isle. Days and hours vary for the facilities.
  • Budget for any paid attractions. Some activities, like the giant slide, have a small fee ($1 per ride), so it’s good to know costs ahead of time.
  • Bring your own food and drinks. Since there are no restaurants on the island, pack snacks or meals. In the summer, look for food trucks scattered throughout Belle Isle.
