Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum

Marvin’s is a Detroit beloved that is part art gallery, part video arcade, and part awesome chaos. It has a lot of older video games, strange machines, and blinking lights, which makes it unique in its own right. Great for wintertime or short getaways on weekends, for the cold, or if you wanting to see anything weird.

Address: 31005 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills
Hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p. Sunday

Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts, a combination of arts and imagination, is a hit with most preteens. The gallery makes art easy to understand and fun by having giant paintings and engaging family sessions or art classes. Does your preteen like to draw? Then give their “Drawing in the Galleries” classes a try; they’re going to feel like real art professionals very quickly, and maybe will want to continue on after!

Address: 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit
Hours: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday

Located at the iconic Flynn Pavilion on Belle Isle, Simple Adventures offers bike rentals (along with kayaks and stand-up paddleboards) that make exploring Detroit’s river-front island easy and fun. Rentals start at just $15 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour, with a full-day option at $55. With helmets included and paths winding through waterfront, green space and historic sites, it’s a perfect outing with your tween — active, outdoorsy and just the right level of adventure for a local family afternoon.
