A Dickens of a Christmas Exhibit at the Plymouth Historical Museum

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to live in Victorian England? Cobblestone sidewalks and street lamps aglow may come to mind. Bring your family's imagination to life as you take a step back in history and celebrate the great Charles Dickens' 200th birthday at the Plymouth Historical Museum's A Dickens of a Christmas exhibit, on display Nov. 21, 2012 till Jan. 13, 2013.

The Main Street exhibit of the museum, normally a reproduction of a typical late 19th-century small town, was closed for weeks for the changeover.

"Our Main Street is transformed into a Victorian village" straight out of vintage London, says Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, director at the Plymouth Historical Museum.

Learn about the genius British author's life while immersing yourself in the time when he wrote his greatest works, including the holiday classic A Christmas Carol.

When you walk down the museum's revamped "Main Street," take a peek into the shop windows – and you'll find some surprises! Artifacts and toys from the era appear beyond the glass with descriptions to add to the learning experience.

You'll spot a menagerie of debonair mannequins dressed in long coats, top hats and era-appropriate garb, too. Also making an appearance is the haunting Ghost of Christmas Future.

"We've created an authentic experience of an actual Victorian street," Kerstens says. So why not give your kids a neat look way back?

The Plymouth Historical Museum is open 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets to the museum are $5/adults and $2/ages 5-17.
