Here is a list of shelters for animals in southeast Michigan that need your help. Make sure to call or check hours on the website. Some shelters are only open by appointment.
Brownstown Animal Shelter
This animal shelter houses strays from Brownstown. Be on the lookout for the adoption and fundraising events.
Catfé Lounge
- Address: 821 Livernois St., Ferndale
This café is a part of the Ferndale Cat Shelter. For a $10 donation, you can stop by for coffee, juice or tea and play with the kitties. Cats and kittens in their care are available for adoption.
Detroit Animal Care and Control
- Address: 7401 Chrysler Drive, Detroit
Adoptions here take place daily from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Check its Facebook for a list of available animals ready to go home with you.
Detroit Dog Rescue
- Address: 24429 Grand River Ave., Detroit
It’s Detroit’s first no-kill animal shelter. You can foster or adopt. Find its list of adoptable dogs is here. The dogs are also categorized by dog-friendly, cat-friendly, kid-friendly and foster homes needed.
Downriver Central Animal Control
- Address: 14300 Reaume Pkwy., Southgate
It serves the communities of Allen Park, Southgate, Riverview and Wyandotte. View its list of adoptable cats and dogs here. The adoption fee includes age-appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm test (dogs) and combo (FIV and FeLV) test (cats).
Ferndale Cat Shelter
- Address: 817 Livernois St., Ferndale
This non-profit is dedicated to providing foster homes, adoption services, trap-neuter-release programs for felines and medical care to the animals. It works along with the Catfé Lounge.
Flat Rock Animal Shelter
This volunteer-based shelter has dogs and cats available to adopt in Flat Rock. It posts information and pictures for each animal on its Facebook feed.
Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit
- Address: 16121 Reckinger Road, Dearborn
Check this shelter’s Facebook page for pet items they may need and any fundraiser events. It also posts adoption events.
Friends of the River Rouge Animal Shelter
- Address: 100 W. Pleasant St., River Rouge
Its Facebook page promotes animals in hopes of returning them to their families or rehoming them. It accepts donations for items the pets may need like food, supplements, collars, disinfectant, gloves and more.
Grosse Ile Animal Shelter
- Address: 25799 Third St., Grosse Ile Township
It offers a Pet Finder on the website to make adoption easy. Adoptions and surrenders are by appointment only.
Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption
- Address: 20542 Harper, Harper Woods
You may donate, help with supplies or volunteer your time at this animal shelter. Keep any eye out on the website for any upcoming events, such as open houses.
Humane Society of Huron Valley
- Address: 3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor
This shelter has adoptions, an affordable clinic and intake department. It also puts on many kid-friendly events.
Humane Society of Macomb
- Address: 11350 22 Mile Road, Utica
The animals here have no time limit and they are proud to be a high-save shelter. You can donate to help or even adopt by clicking on the website. Keep an eye out for fundraising events to help with the costs.
I Heart Dogs Rescue and Animal Haven
- Address: 22415 Groesbeck Hwy., Warren
The cats and dogs available for adoption include pictures and bios. It hosts different adoption events throughout the year, including, “Name Your Price Adoption Special” for families.
Macomb County Animal Control
- Address: 21417 Dunham Road, Clinton Township
The services include lost and found for pets, animal cruelty investigations, dog licensing, animals bites, pet adoptions and more. Keep an eye for events such as the “Free Pet Vaccine Clinic.” It also has a “Kitty Cam” if you’re in the mood for something cute!
Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society

You are only allowed to enter the shelter or clinic with an appointment. They make donating to the shelter easy with QR codes for Venmo, Cash App and PayPal accounts.
Michigan Humane
- Addresses: 7887 Chrysler Drive, Detroit, 13701 Lakeside Circle, Sterling Heights and 900 N. Newburgh Road, Westland

Michigan Humane Rochester Hills Assessment Center

Midwest Rabbit Rescue & Re-Home
- Address: Plymouth area
This shelter does not list its address to avoid illegal drop-offs of rabbits. It has a careful screening process for the adoption services. You can help out by donating, volunteering or sponsoring a bunny.
Oakland County Animal Shelter

Royal Oak Animal Shelter
