Black History Month Events at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

Bring the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream to life for you and your family during the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn’s Celebrate Black History program. This year’s theme, “Journey and Legacy,” emphasizes specific eras throughout black history with the usage of musical and dramatic performances.

Focusing on Pre-Emancipation, events will kick off on Feb. 2 and 3 with a performance from the North Star Gospel and a showing of Ain’t I a Woman: Meet Sojourner Truth.

The festivities continue on Feb. 9 and 10, emphasizing the Northern Migration, with music by Rev. Robert Jones and a performance of Elijah: The Real McCoy.

On Feb. 16 and 17, you and your little ones can partake in the highlight of the Celebrate Black History program by watching Minds on Freedom. This 30-minute, interactive performance will give you and your family the opportunity to relive the Civil Rights Movement and commemorate the work and legacy of activists like Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Gloria Rackley, the Freedom Riders and Martin Luther King Jr. Don’t miss out on the chance to introduce your kids to the inspirational groundbreaking efforts of these African American heroes!

Not able to fit any of these events in your schedule? No worries, the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn will be offering African American Innovator tours every day for the month of February.  You can catch one of these tours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.!

All of this exploration is going to make you and your youngsters hungry, so don’t forget to stop by the Michigan Café during your fun-filled visit to the Henry Ford Museum. They’ll be whipping up special menu items for black history month, so make sure not to miss out!

Weekend events begin at 9 a.m. All of the month’s events are free with admission, which is $17 for ages 13-61, $12.40 for ages 5-12 and free under age 5.
