The annual diversity music festival Concert of Colors is back in Detroit for another year July 15-17, 2016 – and even includes a special event in Dearborn on July 14.
The free fest will not only feature music, but also dance numbers, poetry readings and films. With more than 30 artists, there’s no shortage of performing arts and cultural experiences to enjoy!
On July 14, head to the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn for a “Forum on Community, Culture & Race | Artists Speak: Water is Life,” happening at 6:30 p.m.
Then, July 15-17, there are several Midtown Detroit venues, all of which are on or near Woodward Avenue, hosting artists. Be sure to swing by these spots:
- The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (315 E. Warren Ave., Detroit)
- The Detroit Institute of Arts (5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit)
- The Scarab Club (217 Farnsworth St., Detroit)
- Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center (3711 Woodward Ave.)
A few highlights? On Friday, check out Brown Rice Family (roots/reggae) at The Wright, Planet D Nonet at The Scarab Club, the film Finding Fela at the Detroit Film Theatre inside the DIA and the Dos Santos Cumbia Dance Party outside the museum – and more.
Saturday, there are a ton of performances. Find everything from spiritual and gospel music to funk and samba, African drums and children’s folk music. A food truck rally and Theatre Bizarre carnival games are on the schedule, too. On Parsons Street at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, Arts and Scraps will park their “scrapmobile.” Kids of all ages are able to check out their craft activities for the festival.
Sunday brings even more music, including heavy psychedelic, Arab American rock, a Japanese rock duet and Indian African fusion.

All of the venues will also have refreshments for purchase during festival hours, and there are plenty of restaurants in the area to check out as well. Each location will have the Concert of Colors official T-shirts for sale, too, so you and your family can commemorate the unique experience.
There are plenty of indoor and outdoor events, so you can enjoy the warm sunshine or stay out of the humidity, whichever your family prefers.
