Cultivating Creativity With Boho Mini

Paper, crayons, glue and more – get creative with Boho Mini's series of art-focused activities for youth in Detroit.

A new space offers a simple invitation to kids: “freely create!” That’s the premise of Boho Mini, a series of youth art-focused activities in Detroit.

Things launch this month with a high-energy agenda. Each Sunday, starting May 20, Kids Open Studio welcomes parents and children to get crafty with an array of paper, scraps, markers, crayons, glues and other supplies. Since owner Margarita Barry is also focused on cultural “experiences,” she’s kicking things off a week earlier on Mother’s Day with a Mama & Me African Tea Party. At the May 13 event, for ages 4-12, kids decorate teapots with African-inspired designs, learn Afro-Caribbean dances, hear stories and enjoy treats and tea from the continent.

“Detroit is kind of this melting pot for a lot of different cultures,” says Barry, an artist herself and mom to a 5-year-old girl. “I feel like in the traditional educational landscape, preschoolers all the way up to age 12, they don’t really get to learn about a lot of other cultures hands-on.”

Boho Mini events are housed at Barry’s new Bohomodern retail shop. Watch for other engaging experiences, too, that feature guest instructors who present cultural workshops on dance, music, folktales and more on first Sundays.

“It’s free-create time,” Barry says, “or (you can) just do it as a fun family outing.”
