Daddies, Daughters & Dos

Imagine dads taking care of their little girls’ hair with a knack for twisting up ponytails and choosing accessories. Sound too good to be true? At 9 and 11 a.m. on June 11, Daddies, Daughters and ’Dos at 6 Salon in Birmingham makes it a reality.

Owner and stylist George Nikollaj says the event, back for year two, is meant to introduce confused dads to the world of female hair care.

“I’m a dad of three daughters and unless I knew how to work with their hair from being a stylist, how would I know?” he asks. “So my idea was to do a class for dads, grandpas and uncles to learn how to style the hair. Plus it’s just time you get to spend with your little girl.”

Nikollaj’s girls are 5, 7 and 9. “One has curly hair, one has wavy and one has straight,” he says. “So we determine what kind of hair that child has and make it simple for the dads to work with it.”

The event, for girls ages 3-12, is free; donations go to The Bottomless Toy Chest. Time slots fill up fast; call 248-282-5600 to reserve your spot.

3 HAIR TIPS

When doing your little girl’s hair, stylist and dad George Nikollaj offers this advice.

  • 1. Wash correctly. “Shampoo the scalp because that’s where we produce the oils, and the tips are where we need the oils.”
  • 2. Step up your ponytail game. Put hair into a low ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Create a hole above the tie and guide the ponytail through it.
  • 3. Accessorize! His daughters are into big hair bows at the moment. “That’s an easy way to doll it up and make it look that much cuter.”
