Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show

They'll be begging for a chance to attend the annual Detroit Kennel Dog Show at the Cobo Center, March 2-3, 2013. And by they, we mean the kids – not the dogs. Maybe the dog too, but pooches need to stay home – only registered dogs at this show.

As one of just five benched shows in North America, the Detroit Kennel Club Show allow attendees to get nose-to-nose with over 2,000 dogs from over 160 breeds, including metro Detroit's favorites. The best-loved breed in the Motor City, according to the American Kennel Club, is the German Shepherd followed by the Rottweiller, Labrador Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier and Bulldog.

Pups are perkiest for petting in the morning, but there are a few rules that parents should know: always ask before petting, never stare a dog in the eye, never put fingers in crates and allow dogs to eat in peace.

Besides petting pooches there are a number of special events happening throughout the day. Some fun ones include Motor Cities Fox Terrier Club Terrier Racing, Children's Hospital of Michigan Pet Therapy Program hands-on demonstration and Border Collies herding sheep and ducks.

Families aren't the only ones welcome at the shows. Scouts can earn patches by completing self-guided tours, using the Map of the Stars.

Whether family member or scout member, here are a few tips to keep in mind: strollers are welcome, limited wheelchairs are available (no charge as long as you present a state ID or driver's license), cameras are allowed, maps are available and concessions stands are open.

Tickets are available at the door – cash only. Adults are $15, kids and seniors are $8 and family passes for two adults with up to three children are $40.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
