Embroidery Hoop Dream Catcher Craft

Lore has it Native American dream catchers filter out bad dreams for children and keep the good ones close at hand. In the morning, the bad dreams, stuck in the web, disappear. DIY dream catchers are popular craft projects, especially during summer camp sessions or lazy afternoons at home. Your child can make her own with one trip down the craft aisle at well-known retailer Target. From yarn to ribbons and even feathers, scoop up gear from its cool Hand Made Modern line.

Materials

  • Embroidery hoop set
  • Yarn
  • Feathers
  • Felt letters
  • Other decorations: ribbon, sequins, beads, etc.
  • Tacky glue
  • Toothpicks
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Remove the outer hoop from your embroidery hoop. You’ll want to use the solid inner circle.
  2. Place a small amount of tacky glue on the outside of the hoop. This will be the starting point for creating the center of the dream catcher. Working with a small ball of yarn, place the tail of the yarn into the glue. Wrap the ball around the glue area once. Then, on the opposite side of the hoop from where you started, place another drop of the glue. Pull the yarn tightly to that spot and wrap once. Continue this glue-wrap process across the hoop, moving from one diagonal point to another, until you’ve achieved your desired look with the yarn. Let dry.
  3. Once the glue has dried, it’s time to add decorations. Toward the bottom of the hoop, tie on several strands of ribbons or sequins. On top of this, glue several feathers. To personalize the dream catcher, glue a felt letter (for the first letter of your child’s name) in the center of the feather cluster. Let the piece dry before hanging on a bedroom wall.
