Fourth of July Fireworks Headband Craft

The Fourth of July is less than a week away – and I couldn’t be more excited. My birthday is just two days after July 4, so I tend to have a few days of extra cake, cookouts, and time with family and friends, thanks to our country’s birthday. My birthday party themes always tend to involve a bit of red, white and blue (what a surprise, huh?).

If you’re on the hunt for some patriotic party favors that guests of any age will enjoy, try making your own fireworks headband boppers. I’ve seen lots of felt USA-related holiday headbands at the store, but nothing as colorful as this one. They’re easy to make and very fun to wear!

Materials

  • Headband (try to find one that’s red, white or blue)
  • Pipe cleaners (again, patriotic colors are best here)
  • Mylar pom-pom (I found this at Joann Fabric and Crafts; if you can’t find a pom-pom, simply cut Mylar material into skinny strips)
  • Baker’s twine
  • Sharp scissors

Instructions

1. Start out by separating your pom-pom into two main sections. This will help ensure the right amount of Mylar to use; using the whole pom-pom would be too heavy for your headband.
2. Starting at the bottom of one of your sections, tie a piece of baker’s twine around the strands, about 2- to 3-inches up. Make sure to tie the twine nice and tight.
3. With your sharp scissors, cut right above the twine. Cut in small sections first, to make sure you get all the way through. Re-tie your twine if you feel like it needs to be more secure after cutting. (It’s OK if a few pieces of Mylar fall out.)
4. Take one of your pipe cleaners and wrap it several times around the kitchen twine. This will help keep the mini pom-pom you created secure. Once you’ve done that, wrap the other end of the pipe cleaner to the center of your headband. Bend the pipe cleaner into the desired position and look you want.

5. Repeat these steps to create an additional mini pom-pom. If you’d like to add more, go for it.

6. Once your pom-poms are all set on the headband, you’re ready to impress your guests!

Craft one? Share! Email a photo of your headband to me, lish@www.metroparent.com. I’ll feature it in a future Make It blog.
