Top Hanukkah Happenings for Metro Detroit Families

This year’s Jewish Festival of Lights runs from Dec. 25, 2024-Jan. 2, 2025.

Hanukkah, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated by people of the Jewish faith to commemorate the rededication of the Second Temple. It is observed for eight days by the lighting of candles of a menorah.

In 2024, this celebration runs from Dec. 25-Jan. 2 and residents in metro Detroit are set to celebrate it in a big way. Try these events out if you’re looking for fun Hanukkah happenings for your whole family to enjoy.

  • Address: Congregation Beth Shalom, 14601 Lincoln St., Oak Park
  • Cost: Free admission; donations welcome

This ninth annual event features delicious kosher food, live musical entertainment, children’s activities, a 50/50 raffle, gift vendors, Oak Park Library storytime, bounce house and more.

Countdown to Hanukkah

Dec. 15, 2024

  • Address: Congregation Beth Ahm, 5075 W. Maple Road, West Bloomfield Township
  • Cost: Free

This countdown features games, crafts, tzedakah projects, a pancake breakfast and other fun activities. Registration required by Dec. 10.

DIY With Dad – Chanukah

Dec. 15, 2024

  • Address: Adat Shalom Synagogue, 29901 Middlebelt Road, Farmington Hills
  • Cost: $10/child, free for dads/grandpas

Kids/grandkids along with their dads/grandpas can enjoy a cooking class to make chocolate gelt and sufganiyot in preparation for Chanukah. A pizza lunch is included. No prior baking experience is necessary.

Dec. 25, 2024

This annual event features a fire show, complimentary soup, snacks and cider, crafts, games, greetings with community leaders and the lighting of the giant menorah.

Chanukah Havdalah Glow Party

Dec. 28, 2024

  • Address: Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375 Bell Road, Southfield
  • Cost: $18/family, $8/person

All ages can celebrate Chanukah with glow sticks, songs, dreidels, dinner, the lighting of the Menorah and much more. Kids can wear their pajamas.

Dec. 31, 2024

  • Address: Adat Shalom Synagogue, 29901 Middlebelt Road, Farmington Hills
  • Cost: $18/family, $8/person

Families can celebrate both New Years and Chanukah at this event. Light the candles and countdown the new year. Also, enjoy entertainment, a light dinner, activities and more.
