How to Make a Plaid Dad Picture Frame

Throw a photo of dad and the kids into a wooden frame and add this simple design – perfect for a Father's Day gift!

Father’s Day marks the halfway point of the year; can you believe we’re halfway through 2016 already?! When it comes to the fun, silly and special moments your family has shared so far this year, what are some of your favorites? What about your child’s? For an easy DIY Father’s Day gift this year, have your child select a favorite family photo and present it to dad in a plaid-themed picture frame. Whether the frame heads to work or is displayed at home, dad is sure to appreciate being able to see a favorite family photo each and every day.

Materials

  • Plain wooden picture frame (take a look at this ready-to-decorate pine picture frame from Target’s Hand Made Modern line that we used)
  • Fine-tip felt markers in a variety of colors
  • Finer tip Sharpie marker
  • Ruler

Before you get started marking your picture frame, make sure there are no rough spots on the surface. If there are, give it a quick sand with a small piece of sandpaper.

Instructions

Select a lighter color from your felt tip markers to being your decorating.

Working in one direction, start marking across the picture frame using the ruler as your straight-line guide.

With the first color complete, add a second lighter color. Once again, mark across the entire frame in the same direction.

Now it’s time for the Sharpie marker. Selecting a darker color, start marking lines across the picture frame in the opposite direction of the lighter lines. As you work across the frame you’ll see the plaid design come to life.

Once all of the marks have been made, your picture frame is complete. Try adding some additional personalization options to the frame, like the year or your child’s signature, so that the gift has even more meaning year after year. Add that favorite photo and the gift is ready to be wrapped.
