How to Make Toilet Paper Mummies

If you’re in a bind for a last-minute Halloween costume, going as a mummy is a quick, inexpensive trick. It takes no more than a few rolls of toilet paper to wrap up your trick-or-treater for DIY attire (rain notwithstanding!).

Keeping the connection between mummies and TP going (get it?), an empty roll can be the beginning of a fun Halloween craft project. It doesn’t take long to make a whole family of toilet paper roll mummies in time for this season’s decorating needs.

Supplies

  • Empty paper tubes
  • White and black craft paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Cheesecloth
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Googly eyes
  • Tacky glue
  • Wax paper
  • Toothpicks

Directions

  1. Collect empty rolls to start building your mummy family. Paper towel rolls are great to cut in half to make mummy parents, and toilet paper rolls can be turned into baby mummy twins when cut in half. Decide on your sizes and cut the rolls accordingly.
  2. Paint each roll white. You can paint the inside of each if you like, too. Let the rolls dry completely, standing up on a piece of wax paper.
  3. Once the rolls are dry, it’s time to give them their mummy look, thanks to a package of cheesecloth. Cut long strips of the cloth in various widths.
  4. To start wrapping your mummy, tape one end of the cheesecloth into the bottom of one of the rolls. Start wrapping the cloth around the roll. When you get to the top, stretch the cloth across the opening to close the shape. Work your way back down to the bottom and tape the other end up into the roll opening. Repeat this for all of your mummies.
  5. To give your mummies personalities, add googly eyes to each. Use a toothpick to apply a small amount of glue to each eye and add to the front of the mummy. With the black paint, use another toothpick and add a silly face. Once the paint and glue have dried, your mummy family is ready for Halloween!
