Inside the Craft Bag: Craft Kits and Books for Kids

Need to stock up on crafting items? Here are four ideas from our local crafting expert.

As we begin the second full week of July, we’re roughly approaching the midpoint of summer vacation (gulp!). How are those craft supplies looking after a few weeks of at-home activity planning? At this point during the summer months it’s a good time to take stock of what’s been popular with your child; do you need some new craft kits or books? I’ve got a few crafty items I’ve been keeping in my craft stash that you may want to put in yours, too.

Your Idea Starts Here

By Carolyn Eckert

For those days when it’s rainy and everyone is stuck inside, turn to Your Idea Starts Here by Carolyn Eckert. This thought-starting book can be a great creativity booster for your children when they say there’s nothing to do. With more than 70 questions to get your ideas flowing, pose a few to your children and work with them to find creative solutions.

Zen Origami

By Maria Sinayskaya

If your child loves working with origami paper folding and has mastered most books to date, take a look at Zen Origami by Maria Sinayskaya. Recommended for young crafters starting at age 10, this book is perfect for children who have spent hours practicing their folding skills and are looking for a new challenge. Complete with several pads of beautiful papers, this is an all-in-one crafting kit.

Zoom Loom

Schacht Spindle Company

Working on potholder looms is a great way for children to learn the basics of weaving. Taking a cue from that small loom is the Zoom Loom from the Schacht Spindle Company. This small loom measures in at just 6″ square, making it ideal for on-the-go crafting. Everything you’ll need to get started, short of the yarn, is included with this kit. It also comes with its own carrying case, so when DIY time is done it packs up quickly and neatly.

Marisa’s Big Book of Pop Out Boxes

By Marisa Anne

Designer Marisa Anne’s collection of 30 pop-out boxes is not only a fun, low-key crafting book, it also doubles as last-minute gift wrapping assistance! Created by well-known fabric designers, this book helps children walk through the simple steps of folding the boxes into a variety of different shapes that they can keep for themselves or share with friends.

North Street’s Tabor Tote

What are we carrying all these craft supplies around in? An extra-large tote bag! This oversized tote is by North Street and is made in the U.S. While you can pack it full of craft supplies, projects and activities, it’s also ideal for everyday use and travel. The bag is very lightweight so that when it’s full of supplies, it’s still very easy to transfer from car to crafting site.
