Kid-Friendly Pallet Sign Craft

Young crafters can get in on the pallet sign action with this how-to.

Pallet signs are still hot – REALLY hot – with DIY lovers. The trend has picked up so much momentum that local businesses, like The Barn in Northville, offer custom classes for crafters to make their very own custom pallet signs. Whether you search “pallet signs,” “pallet art,” or “wood signs” on Pinterest you’ll find thousands of ideas to spark your own sign creativity. Young crafters can get in on the pallet action, too.

Instead of deconstructing pieces of wood to create a sign, readymade options, like Hand Made Modern’s slatted sign, are a perfect way for them to make their own custom greeting to hang on their bedroom door or anywhere in their special spaces at home.

Materials

  • Slatted wooden sign blank
  • Craft paint (your child’s selected color)
  • Paintbrush
  • Felt craft letters
  • All-purpose glue

Instructions

To get started, apply a first coat of paint, to the sign blank and let dry. Apply a second coat, and if necessary depending on the color, a third application. Let dry completely.

While the sign is drying, select the words you’d like to display from your felt letters. A set like this group of felt letters comes in a variety of fonts and colors, so have fun mixing styles for your phrase.

Position your letters on the wooden slats to determine the spacing and placement. Once set, turn over each letter one by one and apply a thin line of all-purpose glue to the back of the felt. Turn the letter back over and place on the sign, lightly tapping the piece into place. Repeat for each letter. Let the glue dry completely.

Once the sign is completely dry, it’s ready to hang! If your sign didn’t come with a piece of rope or ribbon already attached, you can staple or hot glue a length of cord to back for easy displaying.
