Make Your Own Picture Frame

When it comes to classic camp crafts, you can bet that yarn is involved. From making lanyards to wrapping sticks (lots and lots of sticks), camp craft rooms are packed with balls of yarns in your favorite summer colors. If your child has already enjoyed some time at camp this summer, or it just isn’t on your family’s calendar this year, you can bring the yarn crafting home by making a camp-inspired picture frame that’s wrapped in … yarn!

Materials

  • Yarn in four different colors (your choice of color)
  • Chipboard or cardboard
  • Tacky glue
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Foam brush
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • We Made It scented stickers – fox design
  • White cardstock
  • 1 1/2-inch circle craft punch
  • Clothespins
  • Decorative mini clothespin (1)
  • Wooden craft sticks

Instructions

Prep the project for your child by cutting a piece of chipboard or cardboard to 5.5-inches wide by 7-inches tall with your craft knife and ruler. Set aside.

With the tacky glue, apply a thin coat to one side of a wooden craft stick.

Next, start wrapping the craft stick with your yarn. I found these small balls of yarn from Target’s Hand Made Modern line – perfect for a project like this.

Once the craft stick has been wrapped, clip two clothespins to either end of the stick and let dry. Wrap three more sticks in your three other yarn colors.

With the piece of chipboard you cut to size, it’s time to start putting the wrapped sticks all around the perimeter. Apply a line of tacky glue on each side and put the sticks into place. Overlap them over the sides of the chipboard so that the raw edges are hidden. Once again, add clothespins all the way around to help create a strong bond between the glue and the yarn. Let dry completely.

Add the mini clothespin to the top of the frame’s center using tacky glue. Let all glued pieces dry.

While the frame and yarn sticks are drying, create the sticker embellishments. Punch out four white circles using the paper punch and add a camp-themed sticker to each circle.

Finish the frame by adding the camp embellishments to each of the four corners on the frame using your hot glue gun. Once the piece has dried, remove the clothespins and clip a favorite camp photo or memento to the center to remind you of summer fun!
