On-the-Go Story Tin Craft Projects

Do you have a member of your family or a friend who keeps empty mint tins on hand for all sorts of upcoming craft ideas? Or … are you perhaps the guilty party? If you do (or are!), there's a crafty life for those tins that your children will appreciate. While they're great for storing small craft supplies, they're even better as small storybook settings that act as an impromptu on-the-go backdrop for your child's favorite small toy. We turned a spare tin into a mountain backdrop for a skateboarding Lego minifig. What will your child create for their toys?

  • Empty mint tin
  • Card stock in assorted colors
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Various shape punches
  • Extra decorating supplies
  • Markers
  • Pencil
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush

1. To start, brainstorm what the scene will be for the tin. Think about the forest, the ocean – even your child's school or your own street.

2. Once the backdrop is determined, trace the tin onto the background piece of card stock and cut out.
3. Glue the backdrop piece of card stock into the tin. Repeat for the lid side of the tin.
4. To set the scene in your tin, you'll want to layer the components, so work from back to front. To add a large element like mountains, like we did, use corner scraps of card stock and adhere to the tin with your glue stick. Add any decorative elements to the paper pieces before gluing them into the tin; it's much easier that way!
5. Keep layering the backdrop elements into the tin. To finish the bottom part of the landscape, trace the bottom end of the tin onto a piece of paper and cut wavy elements like hills and waves. Again, adhere with a glue stick.
6. Once all the flat decorative elements are in place, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the inside of the tin. Keep the tin open as the sealant dries.
7. Feel free to add other flair like houses, trees and even birds, depending on the story.
8. Don't forget to decorate the front of the tin, too!
9. Once dry, the tin is perfect for stashing a few small toys, like a few Lego minifigs, inside for the on-the-go adventures.
