Stamp Ink Pads 101

When it comes to stamping, you’ve got so many fun choices at the craft store to choose from these days. Stamps with cupcakes, stamps with cars, stamps with lamps… you get the idea. And with all these stamp choices, you’ve got just as many ink pad choices, too! Which one’s right for your project? Well, here are a few different ink pads to get you ready to create your family’s next work of art.

Standard Ink Pad

For little stampers, this is a great way to go. The smaller ink pads are perfect for basic stamping and art projects. I like the ink pads from Yellow Owl Workshop for my basic stamping needs.

Pigment Ink Pads

These pigment pads are usually located next to regular ink pads – but there’s a big difference! The beautiful hues found in these pigments must be heat-seat with an embossing gun. They’re fun to use, but if they’re not set, the pigment will smear and smudge on your design.

Individual ‘Petal’ Ink Pads

If you have an intricate design, these smaller petal pads are perfectly for making sure every inch of the stamp is covered. They’re often sold in stacks or even grouped together to like a flower, like this offering from ColorBox.

VersaMark

If you have a budding artist in your home, VersaMark is for them. This clear ink pad results in a watermark effect that’s a lot of fun to stamp with. You can find this at any of the big craft stores or Paper Source in Birmingham.

Stamp Scrubbers

With all this ink, your stamps will need a bath! Stamp scrubbers, made by a variety of the big stamping companies, help keep your stamp clean and looking new after each use. Simply rub the stamp back and forth on the pad to remove the leftover ink.

P.S. Keep an eye out for the May edition of Metro Parent and the magazine’s Make It project – you’ll want to refer to this ink pad tutorial! And if you create a your own crafty stamp project, send a photo to me, lish@www.metroparent.com. I’ll feature it in a future Make It blog post.
