In the April issue of Metro Parent you’ve most likely found the directions for one of our latest projects: a tabletop canvas car play mat. One of the fun aspects of this project is that prepping the canvas for your children to paint doesn’t require a sewing machine. How is that possible? Steam-A-Seam, that’s how! This fusible material helps quickly bind raw edges for projects like this tabletop canvas car play mat to anything your home might need, like placemats and tablecloths. On one of the 23-inch sides of the rectangle, apply the webbing at the edge of that fabric by simply ironing the paper backing. Rip the piece from the roll once you reach the edge of the first side.
Remove the paper backing and fold the fabric down 1/2 inch and press. Your canvas should now be attached.
To protect the raw edge you just folded down, apply another piece of webbing to the piece. Again, remove the paper backing and press. Again, remove the paper backing and press. Repeat this process for the other long side of the mat and then the two short sides.
Once your canvas edges have been prepped, it’s ready for your child to paint.
